GP coordination

ADHD Shared Care UK

Support with a shared care request once ADHD treatment is stable, with a clear explanation of what your GP decides and what happens next.

How ADHD shared care works

Shared care can allow a GP and a specialist ADHD service to coordinate your ongoing treatment. The specialist provides the clinical information and recommendations; the GP considers whether the practice can take on the agreed prescribing and monitoring responsibilities.

It is important to know that shared care is voluntary. ADHD Active can request an arrangement after your clinical treatment is stable, but your GP or practice may accept or decline it. No provider can guarantee shared care acceptance.

When shared care is considered

  • Your ADHD diagnosis and treatment plan are documented
  • Your clinical treatment and dose have reached a stable point
  • Your response and any side effects have been reviewed
  • Your clinician considers GP coordination appropriate
  • Your GP receives the clinical information needed to decide
  • Responsibilities are clear if the practice accepts

The shared care request pathway

  1. 1

    Stabilise treatment

Your clinician reviews whether your clinical treatment and dose are settled and whether ongoing GP coordination is clinically appropriate.

  2. 2

    Prepare the information

We prepare the diagnostic and treatment information your GP needs to consider the request.

  3. 3

    Send the request

A shared care request is sent to your GP or practice for its clinical consideration.

  4. 4

    Your GP decides

The practice may accept or decline. Shared care is voluntary and cannot be guaranteed.

  5. 5

    Coordinate ongoing care

If accepted, the responsibilities for prescribing and monitoring are set out in the agreement and reviewed as needed.

If your GP says no

A decline is not unusual and does not mean your diagnosis is invalid. Your clinician will explain how continuity of care can be maintained and what private follow-up arrangements may be available. Read about treatment titration or our wider ADHD management and ongoing clinical reviews.
