ADHD Treatment Titration UK

A careful, clinician-led process for finding a suitable ADHD treatment and dose, with regular reviews of response, side effects and wellbeing.

What is ADHD titration?

ADHD treatment titration is the period after a clinician has decided that clinical treatment may be appropriate. Rather than assuming one approach works for everyone, you and your clinician review how treatment affects your attention, impulsivity, activity, sleep, appetite, mood and everyday life.

Titration is individual and there is no guaranteed timescale. The aim is a treatment plan whose benefits are meaningful and whose risks and side effects are understood and manageable.

What we monitor

  • Changes in attention, focus and task completion
  • Impulsivity, restlessness and emotional regulation
  • Sleep, appetite, mood and general wellbeing
  • Possible side effects and how manageable they feel
  • Relevant physical health checks and clinical history
  • Whether the treatment remains right for your goals

The titration pathway

  1. 1

    Baseline discussion

Your clinician reviews your diagnosis, health, current symptoms, goals and any treatments you already take.

  2. 2

    Choose an approach

If clinical treatment is appropriate, you discuss a suitable option and how your response will be monitored.

  3. 3

    Regular reviews

You share structured feedback on effectiveness, side effects and day-to-day functioning at follow-up appointments.

  4. 4

    Adjust carefully

Your clinician may continue, change or adjust the treatment based on your response and clinical judgement.

  5. 5

    Stabilise and maintain

Once treatment is stable, you agree an ongoing review plan and can discuss a shared care request with your GP.

After clinical treatment stabilises

Once your treatment is stable, your clinician will discuss ongoing reviews and may request a shared care arrangement with your GP. Shared care is voluntary: your GP or practice can accept or decline the request. Until an arrangement is agreed, ongoing prescribing remains with the service responsible for your treatment.
